General Manager of Primary Production Logistics (PPL Pty Ltd). We run approximately 1000 head of cow calf units in Central and Southern Queensland.
I was approached as to trial a new Branding Product that was developed from natural ingredients, that could possibly be as good if not better than the existing products used during dehorning and castrations.
We agreed to trial the product over a full round of branding at all properties and also assist in a tagging identification process of calves so they could be monitored after completion and into the following day.
We trialled existing products against no treatment and GRO against no treatment and also GRO against existing products.
We applied GRO to our calves during the branding program, including dehorning and castration. We saw immediate results from the dehorning, particularly with blood loss.
The brahman calves will normally be seen shaking their heads after dehorning. When GRO had been applied, this behaviour was not seen in the GRO tagged calves. The calves mothered up quickly and walked back to the paddock well. No calves were sulking and hanging at the back of the mob.
It surprised me that the product worked so well and I will be integrating the use of GRO into my branding program going forward.
We really like the fact that the product doesn’t need to be refrigerated. We can keep a bottle on hand with our branding box.

I’ve been running a livestock contracting business working for several beef grazing enterprises. I was involved in the trial work of GRO and I see a big need for this type of product in the industry. Practically it was easy to use with the applicator attached to the bottle. The bleeding was significantly reduced for dehorning and castration, which was good for the calves, and also meant that my clothes were much cleaner after finishing the job. After applying GRO the general behaviour of the calves after marking were noticeably improved, they mothered up quicker and travelled back to their paddocks easier.
As a horse trainer, I also tried a sample of the product on an accidental wound that occurred on one of my clients breakers. The wound healed much quicker and the horse seemed to be much less distressed than I would have expected.
I would encourage anyone to give it a go, it’s a product that just does what it says it does.
